Old Friends

There’s something comforting in having old friends. They have known me at my best and at my worst, through dorky bangs and questionable fashion choices, as a child and an adult. We have celebrated and mourned together, supported and encouraged, and even infuriated one another over the course of our friendships.  It’s easy to forget who I used to be during the ins and outs of everyday life. But, when I am with these girls I remember a little of my former self – the care-free days, where my biggest worries were getting along with my volleyball coach or getting a passing grade in Physics. I get to act a little more silly, laugh out loud a little bit more (OK, a lot more), and just enjoy being with my old friends who have loved me through so many stages of life. So, here is a tribute to you, girls:

Sara – She’s always the one that is prepared and when there is a problem or kink in the plans, you can count on her to step in and make sure things get done (and done right). She is kind and caring, but please do not cross her or try to cut her in line waiting for a trolley. She WILL break a foot off if necessary. Sara is frequently the voice of reason and is fiercely loyal to her friends.

Molly – Always the one to smooth over awkward situations, Molly is liked by everyone who meets her. She has the gift of making small talk with complete strangers (it truly is a gift!) and has a comforting nature that puts people at ease. She is a great listener and always remembers special details that others would pass over. Molly is very trustworthy, although not around boating mechanisms, and you can always count on her for a laugh.

Amber – If there is anyone who helps me set aside my worries and have fun, it is definitely this girl. Amber is exceptionally great at making us laugh. While she is always the life of the party, don’t be fooled – she has her serious/no nonsense side, especially when an injustice has occurred! She is quick to step in and defend others and right wrongs with determination. She is a hard worker and a great road trip companion if snacks do not include beef jerky.

Katie – Everyone can hold their own, but only Katie comes close to my level of sarcasm. She has a sharp wit, but a soft spirit. Katie can be trusted with any secret and is a very loyal friend. She can seem quiet to some, but is not afraid to speak her mind when she is moved to (and speak it pretty loudly).  She’s usually the one to question the status quo and is always an asset in board game competitions (but only if they don’t go past 10pm).

Annie – Annie can tell a story like no one else. Animated and funny, Annie can make any story hilarious. Definitely the coolest of us (she does have a nose piercing, after all), she is not one to flaunt it. Annie is humble and considerate, but is not afraid to ‘work it’ when given the opportunity. Her laugh is contagious and she is an excellent encourager. She can always be counted on to pull out a great dance move when warranted.

I have other old friends, of course, but I most often get to be with these 5. They are all smart, funny, talented women who once played marbles with me by the swings or 4square on the playground or jump rope at recess. They could all certainly tell you an embarrassing story about me, but probably won’t (probably). They each have made getting through growing up a bit easier for me and have definitely helped me laugh through it all. Thanks, girls, for 20-something years of friendship. Here’s to 20-something more.

How timely, Beki! I have a class reunion in a couple of weeks, so I will be re-uniting with old friends. I am sure I will be doing a lot of reflecting myself.

You enjoy a rare blessing. Hold tight as they can slip away.

I love this Beki. You put so much thought into that. We are very lucky; thank you for reminding us. I would like to take an opportunity to write something special about you:
Beki has a very sharp wit and dry sense of humor. She is the most organized person I've ever met. She will make things happen. She will talk as much as you'd like in person but don't try to call her on the phone. She has a thing about that.

What an amazing post. We are all so blessed to have met as children and to have had the opportunity to grow up together and share all of life's moments together. I hope you will post your picture with what Molly said about you (which I could not have said better myself). It would really complete it to have all of us mentioned together!

How cool is this blog post! I am so thankful to be able to spend time with all of you wonderful girls now that I'm back in Michigan! You are so wonderful Beki, and I will have to add to the previous comments that you are compassionate, caring, quick to support a good cause, and play a mean oboe ;)
